Vineyard Wind Legislation Signed into Law

Announcement by State Rep. Will Crocker

BOSTON – H.1771, An Act Authorizing the Town of Barnstable to Grant an Easement to Vineyard Wind, LLC, was signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker on Wednesday, July 31, 2019. The bill, filed by State Representative Will Crocker (R-Centerville), allows for the Barnstable Town Council to grant an easement for a portion of Covell’s Beach in the village of Centerville that will allow for construction of the interconnection between Vineyard Wind and the New England power grid.

“With the Governor’s signature on this legislation, a huge step has been taken with regard to getting the Vineyard Wind project up and running,” said State Representative Will Crocker. “This project is a win-win for the town of Barnstable. Not only will the town see an increase in revenue over the life of the project, but the entire Cape Cod community and Massachusetts seeks to benefit with the creation of 3,600 new jobs. Vineyard Wind will bring clean and renewable energy to Massachusetts and current estimates suggest that this project will annually reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.68 million metric tons. With 3,200 megawatts of off-shore wind, Vineyard Wind has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 20% of the electricity consumed by the Commonwealth by the year 2035. This is a critical first step to providing Massachusetts with a cleaner and greener future.”

H.1771 had bi-partisan support and passed unanimously in both chambers. With the passing and signing of this bill, Vineyard Wind will become the United States’ first large-scale offshore wind farm.
